Thinking about meeting with a registered dietitian but not quite sure what to expect? You’re not alone! Many people are interested in improving their nutrition but feel unsure about what happens during a nutrition counseling appointment. Maybe you have questions about what you should eat, want help managing a medical condition, or simply feel overwhelmed by all the nutrition advice you see online.
The good news? Your first appointment is all about YOU. There are no judgments, no one-size-fits-all meal plans, and certainly no expectation that you have everything figured out before you walk through the door.
Here’s what you can expect during your first visit with a registered dietitian.
1. Getting to Know You
Your first appointment is an opportunity for your dietitian to learn about you, your health, and what brings you in. We’ll discuss your medical history, medications and supplements, lifestyle, food preferences, and any health concerns you may have.
We also want to understand your goals. Are you looking to improve your energy, manage your blood sugar, lower cholesterol, improve digestive health, work toward a healthy weight, or simply feel more confident about your food choices?
2. Taking a Look at Your Eating Habits
We’ll talk about what a typical day of eating looks like for you. This may include your meal schedule, snacks, beverages, food preferences, cooking habits, and any challenges you experience with eating.
Don’t worry about eating perfectly before your appointment or changing your habits ahead of time! We want to understand your REAL routine, not what you think you should be eating. This helps us identify opportunities for improvement while recognizing the habits that are already working well.
3. Understanding Your Health Goals
Nutrition plays an important role in many aspects of health. Depending on your individual needs, your dietitian may discuss topics such as:
– Blood sugar management and diabetes prevention
– Heart health, cholesterol, and blood pressure
– Weight management and sustainable lifestyle changes
– Digestive health and gastrointestinal conditions
– Women’s health and nutrition through different life stages
– Improving energy, meal balance, and overall wellness
Your recommendations will be based on your individual health history, needs, preferences, and goals.
4. Creating a Personalized Nutrition Plan
This is where everything starts coming together! Based on what we’ve learned, your dietitian will begin developing practical strategies to help you move toward your goals. This might include meal and snack ideas, grocery shopping tips, portion guidance, meal planning strategies, or recommendations specific to a medical condition.
Our goal is to make nutrition feel manageable, not overwhelming. We focus on realistic changes that fit into your everyday life rather than restrictive rules or unrealistic expectations.
5. Planning Your Next Steps
Nutrition counseling is not a one-time conversation. Building sustainable habits takes time, practice, and support. Before your appointment ends, we’ll discuss next steps and determine whether follow-up visits would be beneficial. These appointments allow us to monitor progress, address challenges, adjust recommendations, and celebrate successes along the way.
How Should You Prepare for Your First Appointment?
A little preparation can help you get the most out of your visit. Please complete your intake paperwork prior to your appointment. Our policy is within 48 hours of your appointment to allow your dietitian to review and prepare materials if necessary. It can be helpful to do this on a computer rather than your phone. There is no need to change your eating habits before your appointment.
Other items that may be helpful:
– Have any recent lab work or relevant medical information available.
– Think about what you’d like to accomplish through nutrition counseling.
– Consider keeping a food journal for a few days (this can help when we talk about your current eating habits)
– Write down any questions or nutrition concerns you’d like to discuss.
